Circularity in Your City

The Peace Bridge in Calgary is a vital artery for sustainable transportation, facilitating the movement of thousands of pedestrians and cyclists daily. On average, over 6,000 pedestrians and 3,000 cyclists cross the bridge each day, according to data provided by the City of Calgary.

In terms of environmental impact, the use of the Peace Bridge for walking and cycling instead of motor vehicles has significant implications for reducing carbon emissions. Each pedestrian trip on foot or bicycle represents a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to driving a car.

Considering the average vehicle emits approximately 2.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) per gallon of gasoline burned, and assuming an average vehicle emits about 0.95 pounds of CO2 per mile, the collective impact of pedestrians and cyclists utilizing the Peace Bridge can result in substantial CO2 savings annually.

Based on conservative estimates and assuming an average vehicle trip across the bridge would cover a distance of 2 miles, the utilization of the Peace Bridge for walking and cycling could potentially save hundreds of tons of CO2 emissions annually. This reduction contributes significantly to the city's efforts to combat climate change and create a more sustainable urban environment.
