My favorite place This is welcome to my plant. A path that crosses a native espinillo forest planted in a reforestation by Holcim employees in 2015, which fills me with pride. Your results in sight. Enjoying its embrace when one passes through it demonstrates the phenomenon of global warming that worries us so much today. Malagueño, Córdoba (Argentina), a city that today suffers from a water emergency and that in summer is hit by strong heat, having this green lung and thinking that many similar fronts are growing on the way gives me hope. In the background, small trees planted in 2023 by a new Holcim generation that understands that the path is sustainability to continue progressing, taking care of the environment and its resources. This is a rehabilitated Zimbabwe grass lawn that graces the main entrance gate of Nairobi Grinding Plant. This picturesque frame captures a variety of ornamental fauna like echeveria, aloe Vera, jade plants etc. A baobab tree monolith saddles the center of the lawn amid a variety of potted tropical flower species. In the background, various tree species dot the lawn to complete the garden aesthetic. The lawn is irrigated via pressurized sprinklers and a set of installed garden lights illuminate the plant logo as seen in the back ground.

For me, there is no greater source of inspiration than nature. I took this photograph on one of my favorite trips (Atillo Lagoons, Ecuador), and it did not represent a major effort to capture so much wonder because it only took the sun to illuminate the earth to present its brilliant color chart without the need for editing. For me, nature is a reminder of why we do what we do, why so much effort is made to reduce carbon emissions, why look for alternative sources: to protect our planet and be able to enjoy its wonders one more day... because it's worth it.

The Nile Monitor lizard (Varanus niloticus) was caught in the 'act' of Building Progress for our people and the Planet! The situation was unfolding at South Quarry in Bamburi Haller Park, a rehabilitation showcase for Bamburi Cement PLC and a stronghold of Holcims' Nature Pillar and environmental sustainability. The Nile Monitor lizard is used as a biological control for snakes in the emerging quarry ecosystems. They help in the ecosystems restoration by suppressing and controlling snake population by hunting them down and scavenging for snake eggs. They move during the day and make the Park safe for the over 181, 000 visitors who visit the Bamburi Halller Park annually. They are the 'engineers' helping to restore balance in Nature by controlling hazards!

This is a section of a rehabilitated quarry of Holcim Kenya (Bamburi Cement Mombasa Plant) rehabilitated in 2021 as in line with our sustainability goals. Overall, this brings into effect the great connection of industry and nature. First in rehabilitating the mined limestone quarries and in creating a carbon sink. The forest play a critical role in mitigating climate change by acting as natural carbon sinks and are essential strategies for maximizing their carbon sequestration potential and safeguarding the health of the planet. The trees absorb CO2 during photosynthesis and store it in their biomass (branches, trunks, roots and, leaves) as well as in the soil. The forests also store large amounts of carbon over long periods, thereby reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Industries as Bamburi cement are leading by example in quarry rehabilitation thereby supporting forest conservation and reforestation efforts that enhance carbon sequestration.

It is a late afternoon in Mayer, Arizona and as the sun goes down at Smokestack aggregate quarry I am witness of the beauties of nature. The golden sky glistens it's last light of the day with the hope of another picturesque sunset any given day. When morning arrives the wildlife comes alive and it is this harmony between the animals and heavy equipment that takes my breath away. While making a pad one day I noticed out of the loader window a baby coyote just walking by unphased by my equipment or the noise it makes. I have seen deer, coyotes, javelina and a nest of Red Tail Hawks with two young ones all around our pit and none of them seem to mind us being there but why would they as they are just enjoying our shared sunset for another day.

The Pollinators in the Plant Science says, the presence of butterflies is a good sign of a balance ecosystem. They not only serve as pollinators but they are also food for other animals on the higher level of food chain. Their lifespan is very short but being able to bring offspring to continue the cycle, is much more amusing, especially when they are harmoniously living inside the very busy operational plant. The picture was taken in Lugait Plant near the cement mill area. Butterflies add color to our nature not just by showing-off their beautiful wings but also by flexing us the flowers they help bloom. Holcim Construction in Pueblo, Colorado is completing a major recreation and safety project along the Arkansas River led by Project Manager Angela George and Superintendent Tim Provost. The pre-existing dam was dangerous and had been known to cause fatalities and injuries due to the turbulent water created by the drop. This photo depicts the act of water diversion to prevent negative environmental impact. The river is diverted from the main causeway during low-flow winter periods to prevent the equipment or other work from contaminating the water. In addition to the diversion, filtration methods are also used at the end of the work zone and I test water that is pumped weekly for contamination. On this particular day, the temperatures had dropped too low for equipment to work efficiently, and so I was able to snap this photo of our still work site.

This is a picture of myself feeling happy together with the Lafarge Ecosystems team marking a vital Environmental Day by planting the whistling pine trees which are best known as the pioneer trees in the initial stages of mined lands rehabilitation. The location of the picture in Bamburi Cement Mombasa quarries and in the background the cement plant is visible. One of the pillars of circular economy is to regenerate nature. Therefore the picture depicts my role in ensuring that the mined land is rehabilitated and restored to ultimately ensure that the "wasteland" is regenerated back to be able to sustainably support life and be rich in biodiversity. This can be clearly be complimented by the existence of Bamburi Haller Park and Forest Trails which were rehabilitated as from 1970's and now are important attractions at the Kenyan coastal region with varieties of wildlife, plants and other organisms.

This example of circularity can be observed near my homeoffice, in peri-urban forests and areas. Watch carefully, and you will see. During dry spell millipedes burry under the foliage and create soil. The males are shinny black than females but the females have stronger bodies than males and carry the males during mating. They are the builders of Progress, transforming Bamburi quarries into ecosystems!

After work, i looked through the window of my department's office and noticed an animal, it was a cotuza (which are normally very wary of humans and easily scared off, though abundant in this area); cotuzas are a distant cousin of the capybara, an animal that is very popular with today's youth in social media. Catching a glimpse of a cotuza in the workshop was a brief but nice highlight of my day and i wanted to share it with more people. This picture was taken with a cell phone so it may not have the best resolution, and since it was a coincidence i was even able to take the picture, the composition and lighting may not be great either, and i am no expert, but i believe it's worth submitting because what it lacks in technical aspects is compensated in charm.

I would like to introduce you an amazing place in the city where I live in Barranquilla, Colombia. This is the "Cienaga de Mallorquin" and it is an Eco park that promotes the sustainable development and protect the nature and the wild live. There you can do activities as trekking, bird watching and plant mangroves that are very important to coastal ecosystems. All the structures as paths to walk, viewpoints, etc, are over the water or integrated with the vegetation, so you can walk the park surrounded of nature sounds and magic. For me it is wonderful to have these little paradise really close to the city (a few minutes). Here it is possible to create a respectful synergy between human and nature where we can enjoy and disconnect from the routine at the time that we know more about our world and how to take care of it.

Driving into work every morning, I am met with the sheer beauty that is British Columbia. Often times I can't help but pull over and capture a snapshot of the area. One particularly sunny November afternoon, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get some fresh air along the river before driving home for the day. I walked to the end of a trail that runs parallel with the Quarry and was in absolute awe at my luck.
